Hunger Cleanup

To top off a great Greek Week 2012, we all gathered bright and early on Saturday morning to participate in Marquette's annual day of service, Hunger Cleanup. In teams of about 15, we traveled to different service sites around Milwaukee. Some women helped in a neighborhood cleanup, others readied a community garden for springtime while others baked dog treats for the local Humane Society.

Hunger Cleanup is always a great way to bond with our sisters while making a difference in the community. As my group picked up trash in the neighborhood around a local YMCA, we laughed with the Y staff and one another and worked together to beautify the neigborhood.

Goodbye, Greek Week!

Today marks the end of a wonderful week filled with Greek fellowship, friendly competition, and sisterly bonding, but it was also a day still filled with many great Greek Week events! The afternoon began with a spirited finish to penny wars – girls were adding pennies up to the last second! The afternoon continued on with soccer. Sadie, Emily, Allison, Hilary, Kate, Emma, Shannon, CJ, Corinne, and Gabby led us to a strong third place finish! With a bye for the first game, the girls were pumped to play. They were tied with Alpha Phi for the entire game, but then in the last two minutes of the game Alpha Phi scored, placing Alpha Chi Omega in third place. Finally, Alpha Chis competed in the last Greek Week event of the week – the Greek Olympics. Alix, Shannon, Mandy, Rachel, Amaya, Emi, Bekah, Kara, Julie, and Caitlin with spotters Gina, Jel, and Emily started us off with the pyramid. After many time trials and lots of practicing, the pyramid team perfected the art of pyramid making and finished with a great time! Next was the obstacle course.

Kara started us off strong by spinning around a bat (with her forehead on top of it!), and after spinning, Kara had to run to Jel who then had to hula-hoop before running to Bekah who jump-roped until she could pass the baton to Emi who ran strong to the finish line! Next, Michelle, Fonz, Rose, Julie, Kayla, Alix, Mandy, Gabby, Emily, and Gina, with careful strategy and lots of love from Alpha Chis in the audience, led us to a victory in two tug-of-war battles!

Finally, Mandy and Jel finished off the Greek Olympics with the chocolate pour. Mandy laid on the ground with a cup on her forehead as Jel, blindfolded and with a bottle of Hershey’s chocolate syrup in her hands attempted to pour the chocolate into the cup. The wind was strong, making it difficult and a little messy, but with help from her sisters, Jel did manage to get a little bit of chocolate in the cup (but mostly all over Mandy’s face!)

Overall, Greek Week was a great success! All of the girls in Alpha Chi Omega are incredibly gifted in such a myriad of ways! Bringing all of these wonderful girls together with all of their amazing talents makes any girl proud to be part of a bond like that of Alpha Chi Omega. It was made clear this week especially that we are Real Strong Women, in every sense of the phrase!

Just Keep Swimming (And Spiking, And Quizzing ...)

Wednesday evening our sisters suited up for some inner-tube Water Polo, stormed the court for Volleyball and shed some knowledge for Omega Bowl trivia night.

The ladies dove in for an intense semi-final round of water polo against the women of Sigma Kappa at the Rec Center. Audrey Wayne and Margaret "Fonz" Fonseca started on defense with Mandy Zachow at the goal, Michelle Hohenberger at midpool and BB May and Henna Manjee on offense. Despite some difficult play, BB and Michelle had some great breakaways and Mandy had some great saves in the goal. Audrey and Fonz had some great fun splashing around the pool while helping out their teammates. During the second half of play Cate Cusack and Henna switched off between defending the pool and the goal while Gabby Boyce, Victoria Truex and Shannon Rohn also joined in on the fun and Michelle and her long limbs stayed in the water to finish out the game with few points but many good laughs and second place overall.

Also at the Rec Center, the ladies of Alpha Chi hit the court and bumped, set and spiked their way to the quarter-finals. Captain Carlie Campbell led the women through some close games against Alpha Omega Epsilon, Pi Beta Phi and Alpha Phi. Also contributing to the fierce play were Maggie Bruckner, Aaren Wright, Kelly Rasmussen, Hilary Hungerford, Tin Tin San Ramon, Jenny Lisenfelt, Hannah Smith, Kaite Suhling, Rose Robinson, Bekah Vaughn, Ashley Nickel, Trupti Patel, Christy Zito and Marylena Lehocky. Vickie Lehman and Lauren Bronyarczyk aided the team from the sidelines with their coaching and training skills.

"We have some baller Freshmen volleyball players!" said Carlie Campbell, president.

Overall the women set and spiked their way to third place.

Also on Wednesday, Emily Hoffmann and Elizabeth LaRose showed off their brain power at Omega Bowl, the greek week trivia tournament based on Trivial Pursuit. After handling some difficult questions from the "1999 Genius Edition," the ladies ultimately played Alpha Xi Delta in a semi-final round and took third place overall.

Way to keep up the sportsmanship ladies! Alpha Chi Omega is currently vying for first place overall in Greek Week as we continue to battle it out in other sporting and wit competitions.

Are You Ready For Some Football?

Yesterday, the Alpha Chis put on our eye black and stormed Schroeder Field to play a little football. With four games in a row, we had a tough schedule in front of us – but that didn’t stop us from winning it all! Our team consisted of Kirsten DeGuzman, Liezl Aluquin, Audrey Wayne, Kayla Raguse, Danielle Kirby, Maddie Smart, Danielle Cinkues, Meghann Rosenwald, Victoria Truex, Corinne Catalano, Aaren Wright, Shannon Miner, Emily Carton, and Jel Dickey. Shannon was a wonderful quarterback for our team and Jel provided a great energy for the team. Liezl and Aaren came in for the last game to give the team the extra boost we needed to clinch the win. A HUGE thank you to our ladies who were fantastic cheerleaders for our football players. Congrats to our team! I think the NFL is calling!

Annex Night!

Tonight was the second night of Greek Week and the Alpha Chis went into it feeling confident after a great Airband performance! Megan Garfield, Hilary Hungerford, Emily Hoffman, and Emma McGowen bowled their hearts out while Audrey Wayne, Liezl Aluquin, Kirsten deGuzman, Allison Webb, Carlie Campbell, Corinne Catalano, Jel Dickey, Danniella Banks, Danielle Kirby, and Victoria Truex dodged, dipped, ducked, and dove away for a third place finish in Dodgeball. Katie Rouch sang brilliantly in Greek Idol and BB May and Meghann Rosenwald hit the bullseye in darts. Sadie Ziesmer and Jackie Boratyn rocked the competition in pool and got first place. All in all, we had a great time competing tonight and are very excited for the rest of the week!

Dance with AChiO

“Dance, Dance, Da, Da, dancing in the dark”…and Greek Week 2012 is off!

Sunday marked the kick off of Greek Week 2012, as all of the chapters participated in the annual airband competition. Each sorority and fraternity had to come up with a five to seven minute dance routine while lip singing! These routines have been in the works for a number of months with each chapter working hard to perfect their moves! To accompany each dance routine is a theme; from sweet dreams to superheroes this year’s airband had it all! If you couldn’t guess the Alpha Chi’s were boogying on the dance floor this year, with neon print shirts and ribbons to match everyone wanted to Dance with AChiO! At the end of all the performances everyone waits for the results to be announced; now I know how those celebrities on Dancing with The Stars feel every week! Waiting with deep anticipation they finally called our name, THIRD PLACE! We were so excited, screaming, jumping and hugging, all of the hard work paid off and we could now enjoy our victory! I think the excitement is still running through my veins. As we dance our way to the next set of events, the Alpha Chi’s are looking mighty strong! You know what they say, the Alpha Chi’s that play together, stay together!

You can view the dance routine by copy and pasting this link into your web browser:

Finishing Strong!

Since today was our last day of events this week, we have been working hard to promote the message of positive relationships throughout campus. Our bow sale may have ended today, but little reminders of Healthy Relationships week will remain at Marquette as buyers show off their purchases. Later in the evening, we hosted a self-defense class and finished off with a movie night at our house. We showed an episode of “Law & Order: SVU,” which was highly anticipated by our members. The week may be ending, but be sure to stick with us for one more event next week. This Wednesday, from 4-5 p.m., we will be having a Relationship Check-Up in the Raynor basement. Thanks for all the support this week!

Dodge Domestic Violence

Dodge Domestic Violence is an annual dodgeball tournament that our sorority holds during Healthy Relationships week. Teams of 6 can sign up and compete in winning the "Dodgeball Champions" title. The tournament was held at the Rec Plex in Straz Tower at 6:30 pm. The first game was played by Alpha Chi Omega and Sigma Chi. Sigma Chi won the game in less than 15 minutes. It was a great event and all the proceeds went towards the Milwaukee Women's Center. Along with the dodgeball tournament, we continued our bow sale to raise money for the Milwaukee Women's Center as well.

Healthy Relationships 101 - a healthy start to your week!

Today marks the beginning of one of Alpha Chi Omega’s most important philanthropy events on campus! Healthy Relationships week is full of events sponsored by Alpha Chi Omega as well as other organizations on campus that focus on defining what a healthy relationship is, raising money for the Milwaukee Women’s Center, and promoting domestic violence awareness. Tonight we started out the week with a Healthy Relationships 101 presentation in which students and sisters discussed the facets of a healthy relationship; the main components of a healthy relationship that we came up with were respect, trust, honesty, along with many more. Today we also began selling bows to raise money for the Milwaukee Women’s Center; we will continue selling bows throughout the week to help raise awareness for domestic violence.

Greek Awards 2010 Results!

2010 proved to be a great year for Alpha Chi Omega at Marquette. For the Third Consecutive Year, we won the title of Greek Week Champs. It was a fun, invigorating week that brought our sisters closer together, our support on the sidelines was more impressive than our performance on the field/court/pool.

Also at Greek Awards, we had two sisters receive special distinctions. Kirsten De Guzman was awarded Sophomore of the Year and Claire Harvey was given the 4 years of dedication award. We are so proud of Kirsten and Claire!

Finally, Alpha Chi Omega received awards for Outstanding Leadership and Campus Involvement.

We're so proud and honored to have received these awards and can't wait to see what the 2010-2011 year will bring.

Great Work Ladies!

We're proud to be the red and green all day!
